Gary Payton Looking to Land Coaching Gig in Return to the NBA
Hall of Fame point guard Gary Payton is ready to return to the NBA.
Don’t for MJ, not to play.
The gritty point guard, better known as The Glove for his stellar defense, is hoping to get back to the league in a coaching capacity. With a plethora of openings this offseason, Payton can become a viable option for a team in need of a tough-minded Payton who excelled in many aspects of the game throughout his illustrious career.
“I have had conversations in the past about coaching, but the timing wasn’t right. I believe I now am ready to coach,” Payton told Yahoo Sports on Thursday. “A lot of young NBA players are a voice away from reaching their true potential. I would like to join an NBA staff where I can help coach, mentor and guide players toward the hard work, focus and determination needed to become a reliable contributor to a team’s success.”
With plenty of coaching staffs being reshuffled and teams moving on from head coaches, Payton could be presented with an opening to get back to the NBA game.
And for whatever it’s worth, Payton was a coach in Ice Cube’s BIG3 concept.
