New Orleans Pelicans Hire Stan Van Gundy as New Head Coach

Stan Van Gundy is the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Pelicans “were sold on SVG’s abilities as a teacher with a young roster, his history of building top defensive teams and his vision for the roster in place.”

Van Gundy has a career coaching record of 523-384 with stints in Miami, Orlando, and Detroit. He is most known for leading the Orlando Magic through one of the more successful stretches in franchise history, where the team had multiple 50-win seasons from 2007-2011. Van Gundy has one finals appearance under his resume, reaching the finals in the 2008-2009 season.

He joins a roster featuring an abundance of young talent such as Zion Williamson, reigning most-improved player of the year Brandon Ingram, and Lonzo Ball.

Van Gundy also reunites with his former player, the veteran J.J. Redick, who used to play for him with the Magic.
