Anthony Davis Waiting on Giannis Antetokounmpo Before Re-Signing
Only one big name remains on the open market with training camp just days away.
That name is Anthony Davis.
The superstar big man fresh off winning his first NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers declined his player option and has yet to sign a new contract.
Normally, players of Davis’ calibre opt to sign long-term max contracts, but as of late superstars have found creative loopholes to create flexibility for their short-term futures. Just last season, Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard signed a three-year max deal with the third season being a player option. That is definitely an option for Davis, as is a 1+1 deal, which would allow the former Kentucky Wildcat to test the open market once again next season during what is projected to be the grandest free agent class in NBA history.
Windhorst suspects AD is taking his time to decide what contract he chooses is because of Giannis. If Giannis doesn’t sign supermax he thinks AD will sign a 1+1, both him and Lebron will opt out next offseaon and recruit Giannis to the Lakers

So what is the hold up?
Brian Windhorst of ESPN believes that Davis is biding his time, waiting on reigning two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to make his decision on whether or not to sign the super max this offseason. Windhorst reports that the LeBron James and Davis are interested in potentially teaming up with Giannis next offseason when James will be eligible to opt out of the final year of his deal.
In this sort of situation, a 1+1 deal would make plenty of sense for Davis, but the clock is ticking with the season right around the corner and the deadline for Giannis to sign the super max approaching in just under a month – December 21.
If things go according to plan, this may be the greatest Big 3 in the history of the NBA.
