905’s Gary Payton II Named G League’s Defensive Player of the Year

Like father, like son.

At 12-3, the Raptors 905 boasted the best record during the short-lived 2021 G League season inside of the Disney bubble in Orlando.

A big part of their strong bubble play was the defensive abilities of Gary Payton II who on Friday was named the G League’s Defensive Player of the Year. Son of the Hall of Famer Gary Payton, one could say defense has been in Payton’s blood since the day he started playing basketball. Leading entire G League with 2.54 steals per game, Payton II also averaged 10.8 points and 5.6 boards, helping lead the 905 to a semi-finals berth.

The award was decided on by both coaches and general managers of teams that participated inside the bubble.
