New Orleans Pelicans Hire Willie Green as Team’s Next Head Coach
The New Orleans Pelicans are coming off quite the disappointing season.
After entering this past NBA season with elevated expectations, the Pelicans struggled under head coach Stan Van Gundy.
While the team’s star duo of Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson both had great seasons and former No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball made some major strides, the Pelicans finished the year with a 31-41 record, good for 11th in the Western Conference. The team’s poor year led to the firing of Van Gundy after just one season at the helm.
With the Pelicans hiring Willie Green as their head coach, the NBA has now reached 40% of NBA coaches being Black with 12 NBA teams being led by Black coaches now – a threshold that has never been reached before.
Hopefully they’re given time & some sustainability.

This week, the Pelicans have found Van Gundy’s replacement.
The Pelicans have hired former 12-year NBA veteran Willie Green to serve as the team’s next head coach. The 39-year old Willie Green was among one of the most respected people in the game during his playing career and has maintained that reputation as an assistant coach. Following retirement, Green spent three seasons as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors, before moving over to the Phoenix Suns.
Green is currently part of a Suns staff that has helped lead Phoenix to their first NBA Finals berth since 1993.
