Blazers Unwilling to Move Damian Lillard, Star Hasn’t Requested Trade
I’ll preface this by recommending you take this how you like.
It is the NBA after all.
Anyways, despite the ongoing rumours, the Portland Trail Blazers have maintained that they are not looking to move superstar point guard Damian Lillard. Furthermore, Zach Lowe of ESPN reports that Lillard has not requested any trade to this point.
Over the past few months, Lillard has been characterized as being disgruntled by the direction of the Blazers franchise and ready to move on from the organization. Teams such as the New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Lakers have all been linked to the star guard. But as the offseason has gone on, we have dealt with a lot of noise and very little substance.
With the Lakers acquiring Russell Westbrook and the Knicks bringing in Kemba Walker, both teams appear to be out of the hypothetical Lillard sweepstakes. The Sixers look willing to move All-Star Ben Simmons, but to this point, now legitimate trade discussions have heated up.
This coming season will be the first year of Lillard’s new four-year, $176 million extension with the team and as pricy as that sounds, Lillard is worth every penny. With that in mind, any potential trade for the superstar will require a lot of time and maneuvering as Lillard remains one of the top-three point guards in the game with plenty of years, albeit expensive years, of control.
The upcoming NBA season is still a ways away, but it now appears very unlikely that the Blazers do move Lillard and moreover, it is almost unnecessary to pull the trigger so early given the multiple years of team control.
Then again, it is the NBA we’re talking about after all.
