75 Years to the Day

NBA Celebrates Its Inaugural Game, Releases City Edition Jerseys

Today marked a monumental day in NBA history.

On this day, 75 years ago, the NBA held its first ever regular season game at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto between the New York Knicks and Toronto Huskies.

In front of a crowd of 7,090 people on November 1, 1946, the Knicks defeated the then-Huskies by a score of 68-66. The following day, seven other teams kicked off their season in what was an 11-team league at the time. Today’s game is far different than it was back in the day, but there still remains a number of similarities.

Games were 48 minutes long, divided into four 12-minute quarters. The 24-second shot clock was not introduced until the 1954-55 season. Tickets ranged from 75 cents to $2.50, unless of course you were taller than the Huskies 6-foot-8 center George Nostrand – in which case, you would get into the venue for free (I’m not kidding).

The Knicks would go on to finish their inaugural season with a 33-27 record, qualifying for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Huskies would struggle in their lone year, putting together a lowly 22-38 record. Basketball would only return to Toronto in the mid-90s when the Raptors were named Canadas team.

In celebration of the league’s 75th anniversary, the NBA released its city edition jerseys for all 30 of its team. The new jerseys will be available in the NBA Store starting on November 15 and teams will debut the fresh threads in-game beginning on Christmas Day.

Today was truly a day worth celebrating.
