Kings Fire Walton

Sacramento Kings Fire Luke Walton, Name Alvin Gentry Interim Head Coach

Rocky may be the best term to describe Luke Walton’s tenure as the Sacramento Kings head coach.

Having lost seven of their previous eight games, the team announced that it has fired Walton on Sunday afternoon and promoted associate head coach Alvin Gentry to interim head coach status until further notice.

“We all know all of us have to be better, especially over the last two weeks,” general manager Monte McNair said. “We’re not meeting expectations. That’s not just on Luke. That’s on me, the rest of our coaches and players. Everyone acknowledges that.”

Sliding down to 12th in the Western Conference, the Kings have endured recent losses to the likes of the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Toronto Raptors – all teams that have individually struggled throughout the early goings of the regular season.

“I think we have the talent,” McNair said. “We’ve shown that we can do that. We’re going to get back to that and Alvin will be the guy to lead us there.”

Gentry will be taking over his sixth NBA team while assistant coach Rico Hines will be promoted to the front of the bench. Hines was originally hired by Walton as a player development coach in 2019. Gentry’s job is said to be a performance evaluator and if the veteran coach is to meet a number of pre-discussed benchmarks, he will be able to maintain his role as head coach on a long-term basis.

Meanwhile, Walton leaves the Kings after numerous run-ins with players as well as a couple of off-court controversies. In his two-plus seasons with the team, he was able to lead the Kings to a mediocre 68-93 mark.
